Throw Us A Bone
The most cherished moments allow us to be our authentic selves, with no judgment involved, but rather a possibility to embrace the endless love of a friend. Those moments present themselves when a very unique atmosphere emerges, when the surrounding is safe, and the people we are with are close and dear to us. The magic starts to happen when we imagine the events taking place in nature, free from the day-to-day distractions of endless notifications interrupting the non-digital world.
Throw Us A Bone tells a story about a group of friends enjoying a time of togetherness, creating meaningful relationships, and building their individuality through the collective experience. The team suggests that “Our journey from grommet to fully functioning human being is complex. Sometimes beautiful. More often, not so much.” The image created is reminiscent of a dream as the rays of the sun are softly lighting the faces. The dream-like feeling that is created transcends to embrace reality through a meticulous choice of models and the creation of the characters with styling, hair, and makeup. We speak with the team about the project to discover their approach to creating the story and working together as a team.

‘No matter how deep in a weekend, holiday, or spa session you are, there will still be seven varieties of something else needing your attention when you next unlock your phone.’
When was the last time you actually felt that there wasn’t too much going on?
No matter how deep in a weekend, holiday, or spa session you are, there will still be seven varieties of something else needing your attention when you next unlock your phone. So imagine growing up in a world where this is happening from the moment that you can clumsily key in your mum’s phone code.
‘Our journey from grommet to fully functioning human being is complex. Sometimes beautiful. More often, not so much.’
Now fast-forward to your teens, where you actively look to shed those initial layers of naivety in your quest for peak adulthood. Our journey from grommet to fully functioning human being is complex. Sometimes beautiful. More often, not so much. And while the bit of tech in your palm, of course, has some pretty huge benefits, it also now turns the liminality in which these trial and error are meant to take place in a highly-pressurized environment. A virtual world that demands attention, judges harshly, and preaches productivity.

Throw Us A Bone is a series that portrays a touch of nostalgia for a group of friends in the oddly novel act of aimlessly loitering on a beautiful late autumnal day. Just being there in whichever bored, uninterested, or cheeky way you feel suits the mood. Because in this fantasy world, society is throwing you a bone and allowing you to just do you. For an extra dash of nostalgia, we set our shoot in autumn, a beautiful month of change where the waning summer makes our hearts yearn for a continuation of the good times. Much like we might yearn for the days when apps weren’t ruling our existence.
Bas & Indiana first came together for this project over their collective love for working with denim. Indiana’s unique approach to sourcing her garments went cross-generational this time. Some of the pieces you see still carry the aura of countless all-nighters at the sewing machine from the clever fashion design students who made them. Together with Ami’s eye for diverse, youthful faces, the photo series presents a group of this generation’s youngsters maintaining a great friendship.”
