Charm
Charm is a story about transformation through imagination, freedom of choice and direction, and creativity. Elements like clay and fabric allow this transformation to take place, creating the transition between an almost sculpture-like stillness to movement. The body serves as a source of freedom in this movement, while the narrative is emphasized through styling and makeup.
The decision to shoot a multi-medium story using a digital camera, a medium format film camera, and a Handycam allows the creation of a dialogue between the creative expression of the photographer, the model, and the team. The team behind Charm are Suus Waijers, a photographer; Misha Kratina, a stylist; Anh Nguyaen, hair and makeup artist; and Charlotte Zagt, a model.

‘The story is focused on the body as a symbol of empowerment. Clothes take on their own movement and shape, complementing the body rather than shaping it.’
The story is focused on the body as a symbol of empowerment. Clothes take on their own movement and shape, complementing the body rather than shaping it. Clothing is a way of expression but also a powerful key for changes. We also worked with other elements like clay and fabric to enhance this feeling of movement.
We came up with a concept, but during the day, we felt that it was going to be a more intuitive story rather than really working through the concept. I think one of the best things about fashion photography is working together with a team and deciding to let some things go at the moment.
I worked with both my Mamiya RB67 and a digital camera. Besides that, I also filmed parts with my Handycam. The creative process — after we shot everything — lets me choose what to do and try out different things to see what connects the images, which makes it much more fun. Printing out the photos to see what works best and scanning them gives some of the images this extra layer that is needed.
